Abidjan (ABJ/DIAP) 2022

Post by PH-AVR »

Work visit to Cote d'Ivoire with limited spotting opportunities which was not helped by arriving and leaving in the dark... Glass windows allow some spotting from terminal. 2 security guys came to me after I looked only 5 seconds through my bino and shouted something in French so guess spotting is not appreciated. Airport road has tons of walls and fences that didn't allow for any viewing. Quiet airport anyway with few but high quality/rare African movements if you are lucky. Would appreciate help with the 2 Antonov 124s. Wonder what they were transporting between Niger and Cote d'Ivoire with multiple ADB flights this week according to Flightaware....
cheers
Anton

2 unknown bizjets in the dark...

Drove by highway south of airport and saw a few planes from the bus. Landing shots may be possible from that area near the sea though it looks like a very poor area so one would stick out immediately.

Departure in the night so limited spotting from bus, from terminal and while taxiing out. I am not 100% about Antonov reg as it was hard to read on my photo. It would be appreciated if anyone can help/confirm with the flight number) Thanks!

Our departing Brussels A330 had a problem with the cargo door so we had over an hour delay causing it to land with only the last rays of light of the day. Plus I was on the wrong side of the plane as we landed on 21 instead of 03 which I had hoped. At least I could see the freight corner and was happy to catch the Prescott CN-235 which is an odd ball. It was using that week ‘PSK606’ flying Lome-ABJ-Conakry.
Cheers

Two super rare departures were seen at some distance from the airport and I added photos in the ABJ set below. The Ukrainian Mi-8 could be ID-ed thanks to Radarbox.com. Last year it was seen in CAR with UN-WFP (World Food Program) titles but looks like these titles are gone. It flew Yaounde-Douale-Ikeja-Cotonou-Accra-Abidjan-Monrovia over 2 days so presume it was some repositioning flight?

I could read off some very interesting frames from the terminal but didn't use camera due to security guys plus there are multiple layers of glas, piers and equipment in the way in most places. The 4 with a question mark are highly likely candidates but were not read off. I saw from the terminal a Fokker jet and a Gulfstream on the military platform from the front/ pointing towards the terminal. I understand the F100 & the G-III are stored outside and location is correct (also visible on google maps). The night shot of the open hangar at the military platform shows the back of a wingletted CN-295 and the front of a white AW139. The Ivorians have one of each so they are the likely candidates but again not 100% sure...
cheers

Another visit to Ivory Coast and this time I deliberately sat on right side of the plane (constant southerly winds so runway 21 arrivals are standard) and opted for a day time arrival with Brussels Airlines instead of late arrivals with Air France in the dark. Photographed almost the whole Ivorian government fleet incl. the stored Fokker 100 and some additional Air Force transporters including both Antonovs & the Casa 295 during the landing. Plus the rare Mauritanian EMB175 that could be photographed well after leaving the plane. Plan succeeded!
cheers

Nothing visible on any of the apps on my phone…..

The whole Air Cote d’Ivoire fleet was seen incl.the Dash stored in an hangar. A nice Moroccan Air Force Hercules was a cool new frame as was a new DHL ATR. Just 2 quick shots given security and various other physical obstacles.
