Photoheavy trip to Duxford, Gatwick, Heathrow, RIAT july'11

Post by nustyR »

BEWARE; PHOTOHEAVY !
CIVIL, MIL AND CLASSICS

In july I spend some 10 days at Duxford Flying Legends, Gatwick, Heathrow, RIAT. It took me a while to sort the loads of GB's I shot, yes, sometimes 'no guts no glory mode' was ON :D

Part 1 ; Flying Legends at Duxford.
Prop-blur was easy because of the grey weather. No ND-filter was harmed in this session.

2 I prefer the crop, look at the co-pilot, checking his engines.

*** Gatwick ***
14-07 and 15-07

After some great days in London centre I had to bring my girlfriend to Gatwick ( she had to go working again ).

16 What to do late at a Wednesday afternoon at Gatwick ? Well spot some IL-96 from Cubana for instance
I saw her tail by coincidence at the ramp and asked a local spotter for her ETD. In about 10 minutes she should leave !!
I decided to proof my luck and rushed to the east side of the airport ( I was on the west at that moment ). A few hours before I noticed a spot at google were banking shots should be OK. When I arrived at the spot, the Cubana came over within 2 minutes :D  :D Talking about luck.

Image

17 She started banking and made a complete 180 in front of me

Image

18 It took me a while to find the right banking-spot without trees and restricted parking space. This is not the best shot, but a best spot to remember.

Image

19 Banking with last evening light.

Image

20 The next morning I got up early to watch the sunrise ( which wasn't there off course   ).

Image

21 This was a lot later. Too much backlit as well. So it was time to check out at the hotel and go to Heathrow.

*** Heathrow ***

15-07 / 16-07 / 17-07 / 18-07

I stayed in the Jury's Inn for 3 nights at he the seventh floor with excellent view over runway 27L :D :D

22 This must be one of the best hotel views I ever visited :D

Image

23 It's hard to get a real sharp picture because of the window you're shooting through.

Image

24 So went out to get some banking action. The first day I missed her banking like this with 15 seconds. I was just moving between spots while she came around. The second day I had more luck.

Image

25 Although Singapore banks to the south, Qantas chooses north

Image

26 But Etihad is going south as well :D

28 Talking about a spotters paradise; Myrtle ave

29 Fighting with lens flare ( coming from the window ).

Image

30 Invasion of BA Airbuses.

Image

31 Taken from the same spot at 27R.

Image

32 I never knew they were flying the 300 series already to LHR 9 ( I always spot the 772 over my house ). This baby is flying from New Zealand with a stop at KLAX. She came in with a 8 hour delay just after sunset.

Image

33 Room view again.

35 I used 24 mm on a full frame for this shot.

38 I used 24 mm on a full frame for this shot.

39 Almost the same spot at 27R with 700mm

46 Both planes are taxing the same direction. The 773 just landed, the 772 is taxing out to 27L.

49 The moment 1 of these planes arrives at EHAM I take a day off. :D Now they were blocking each others view.

50 Just after take-off with dirty weather.

61 I love this 'after sunset light'( twilight ) 1280 pix. The special flare is created by shooting through the fence.

Image

62 Beautiful plane in ugly weather.

Image

63 Heathrow has got some very good banking possibilities.

Image

64 :P :P :P :P

Image

65 Three heavies at final, watch the last 747, she has got condensation clouds

Image

66

Image

67

Image

68 This is a nice spot near T5, but often your photos will be ruined by jet-wash from other planes

The crew of Sally B does this quite often. A poignant reminder...
