Florennes 23-10

Post by DJdeRidder »

After yesterday's TLP got canceled and everybody left home, we decided to stay and photograph some locals for a change. Only seven were flying, but the light was pretty good and they were practicing many approaches so we were happy with the results.

Interesting to see the display jet (and FA108 as well) fitted with live AMRAAMs and Sidewinders, instead of smokewinders.

Nice pics, we left after the two last Falcon's took off and went to Geilenkirchen where an Transall and 2 AWACS were coming in.

Too bad the missions were canceled

Me and my friend Jaco were among the few that decided to stay after the mission got cancelled. So here's a small report of what still could be seen and pictured.

Although the major part of our drive to Florennes was under a clear blue sky, the Ardennes appeared to have a microclimate of its own when we arrived....
Image

Fortunately, skies opened up a little later. A couple of F-16's left and the light on taxi- and runway was perfect.

But by this time it became clear that there wouldn't be any TLP mission today....incredible if you look at the great weather. So what to do...find some other place to go or stick to the fence? We decided to stay, knowing that over half a year or so, we wouldn't be visiting Florennes so often anymore. Let's use the occasion to shoot some more locals then....Luckily, the Spanish Herc that had arrived before we did, left again.

After which a replacement Falcon 20 came in...sistership G-FRAU had left during the misty hours.
Image

From then on, it was local stuff only. We hoped for some of the special tails, but none of them showed up. What we did get:

The only Spanish jet coming close enough for a picture, couldn't even do this under it's own power:

So we went home with mixed feelings...got some nice shots, but just think about AV-8's, F1's, F-18's under these light conditions.....

Driving back home we heard the sad news about a crashed Italian chopper in the north of France. It wasn't very difficult to guess that this probably was one of the Pelicans on its way to Florennes. Talking about putting things in perspective.....Our thoughts go out to the relatives of the deceased.

Kind regards,
