IL76's in the low countries (oldies)

Post by EC »

Hi All

It looks like we have somewhat exhausted the B707 topic. Lets kick off another, we already mentioned a number of types but the IL76 is one of my favourites.
I have named the topic in the low countries, that would include Ostend in my opinion so post your replies with pictures Belgium!

To get things started (and forgive me for making it a complete broadside at the first go) here are some of my shots.

During the eighties Schiphol had a number of visits by Iraqi IL76's to pick up some dark (chemical) merchandise.
Image

There were also visits by Syrian IL76's but I was never so fortunate as to see them.

Otherwise we had to make do with the occasional Aeroflot example

Another friendly neighbor was Lybia in those days

This last one is at Rotterdam ofcourse

Then came Glasnost and all of a sudden there were IL76's available for freight charters. It started with Metro Air, a Swiss company chartering the Russians for humanitarian flights
(hence the red crosses)
Image

Image

then the red crosses were gone and they came on regular freight charters with Schiphol becoming some kind of hub for them
(we even had a Yak40 doing crew transfers)
Image
finally the Aeroflot cheatline disappeared
Image

Following in their wake a whole bunch of companies came and went

Most of them still had the aeroflot cheatline, these were exiting times. Things got really classy when actual colors were applied

Heavylift were the freightbrokers for Volga Dnepr in those days

Image

Image
Moscow airways and Uralinteravia only made one visit each to my knowledge, Uralinteravia flew freigth for a group of people that arrived in an Ural Al Tu154.

Most gracious however was Cairo Charter & Cargo

I hope you like this selection and please, if you have some more airlines, cargo companies or air forces please feel free to add.

Stefan Lodewijks also has a topic on more recent visits by the type to Eindhoven:

Kind regards

I came across this one yesterday, which visited Leeuwarden in april 1993, together with two Su27 Flankers. I believe this Il76 was also used for zero gravity flights.

Unfortunally we don't see these types very often anymore.

Not just a great topic but a good narrative too, EC. Personally, I don't see the 707 topic as exhausted but I just did not get to it anymore. No reason to put the 76 on hold though! We may have been nearly next to each other by the way, with that Moscow Aw take-off... 12feb95? 8)

Elmer, 76766 flew with Space Research Centre indeed, untill 1994 and again from 1999.

I started spotting in 1990 and started to be a 'photographer' besides the numbers in 1994. Just a few quick ones from Oostende...I must find a proper place for all my pictures after I changed houses about 1,5 years ago...but you know...TIME...but for the moment they are save/dry and dark stored.
Sorry for the quality...just scanned them with a cheap scanner.

A nice day it was 8 October 2000...9 x IL-76, 1 x A300F, 1 x An-124, 1 x DC-8F, 1 x An-74, 1 x An-26 and 2 x An-12:

And a few Schiphol/Rotterdam ones thru the years...

I noted her on 22 feb. 1995...so at least there was a second visit.

Off topic, but the winning numbers that day were...on a sunday:

RA-76490 IL-76T AFL c/s, Elf Air/ACS
UR-76687 IL-76MD Volare logo, n/t
EK-76445 IL-76TD Dvin/UNWFP
UR-UCJ IL-76MD Khors Air
EW-76737 IL-76TD Volga Dnepr, white
UK-76426 IL-76TD Uzbekistan
UR-76704 IL-76MD Volare logo, n/t
UR-78772 IL-76 MD ATI Airlines/AHC
UR-UCT IL-76MD AFL c/s,n/t

A good indication that period was to check the Ostend teletext arr/dep page to see if you had some luck that day...If you noted some strange company codes comming from a strange place you knew it was time to go.
