Forum rules
ImageThis is the forum to share your recent aviation photos with the rest of the community, being photos not older than six months at the moment of topic opening. Theme-based topics, not about recent events, should go into the sub-forum.
Although we will not screen beforehand, we reserve the right to delete any images, especially if clearly unsharp or otherwise low in quality. For more information on how to upload you images, check this post.
In topic titles, please use airfield names in stead of just codes, and be clear about what kind of photos your viewers can expect (e.g. CIV/MIL, location etc.).

Finally, bring any photo criticism understandable and to the point, not cynical or offensive! Simultaneously, do not feel offended by criticism per se, but simply explain your motives, taste et cetera, or ignore if you wish so.

Hello,

Bunp is for communiction with satellites (I believe).

E-4 is used as Airborne Command Centre (in times of crises), lately they are used to transport the Sec. of Defence around (looks like some sort VIP-role), although you could think as the USA in crises in Iraq and Afganistan, they need good communciatiosn with Sec. of Defence at all times. Probably that is why they use the E4's more often for VIP-flight , they are much more suffisticated then the C-32 which are normally used.

Bye,

Peiter

Why all the government aircraft all of a sudden on EHAM? Did I miss something?
(just back from vacation so just asking  )
I always say a boy can learn more at an airport than at any school.

The "hump" or the mini-radome houses the EHF Milstar SATCOM , UHF SATCOM radio with full duplex voice COMM and the E-4B’s superhigh frequency (SHF) frequency division multiple access (FDMA) communications antenna, the only such system on an airborne platform.

Further COMM capabilities:

UHF Command & Control
MF Radio
VHF FM
GFE/CFE
STU-III/R
ACP (HF)
Liaison (HF)
C3 UHF Radios
INMARSAT
Global Air Traffic Management (GATM II)

And one of the most important COMM capability is the Senior Leaders Communication System (SLCS ) / Direct Broadcast Service plus access to Defense Information System Network and Public Switch Network for voice, video and data exchange on and off the airplane.

So you might think that the USAF E-4B is the only 747 airplane equipped with EHF, UHF SATCOM Radome "hump" similar in size and dimensions?

You will be amazed....

detail , it is NOT functionally equal to the E-4B's COMMS capability. Remember that the VC-25A and E-4B does not have "shared"-technology when it comes to advanced communications capability in comparison with other countries.
