Lake District; revenge!

Post by Thijs »

It was April 2010; Eyjafjallajökull was very active at that time and hindered air traffic over Northern Europe. The Great Leader and some of his followers went for the first time to the Lake District for some low flying action. A lovely hotel was found in the middle of the Lake District; the weather was splendid; the scenery stunning; we knew the spots....and the only thing we saw in two days was the pass of a single Hawk T1.

Years passed by....and still there was the feeling...we must go back...it's a great place for low flying. It turned out 2022 became the year of our return to the Lake District! Two of the original group took the gamble!

Due to the cancellation of Cobra Warrior an alternative program had to be made; obviously the Lake District would be part of it. When the departure date came near, it turned out the weather would be great.

22 and 23 March were spend in the Lake District; we stayed in the same lovely hotel as twelve years ago...it was still lovely.

And what a revenge it became. A four ship of AV F-16C's made a pass at Tuesday; a single AV F-16D turned up at Wednesday. Qatari Hawk's were regular visitors. Three different examples did multiple passes. A RAF Hawk T2 and two different Typhoon's also did their trick. A RAF A-400 was also active in the area, unfortunately it didn't pass our location. The Apache was one of three operating out of "nearby" Leeming.

All in all; a great place and for sure we will return. Hopefully in less than twelve years. There are still some spots we haven't discovered yet.

Hope you will enjoy the pic's.

Dunmail Raise prior "entering" lake Thirlmere. Above the lake they are lower, the ones where they go from right to left are taken above the lake. But distance is quite far; so far we didn't find a good vantage point....but we enjoyed a beautifull hike :D We were lucky with the Apache as it turned to our position and wasn't in the centre of the lake.
