Photos Souda Greece Oct 19 &20

Post by Trabanti »

The news of the QRA F-16 mishap here today reminded me to post some recent photos. A selection of the result of a day and a half driving around this shared military/civil airport a few weeks ago can be found below.

I found a variety of spots. It took some time to end up at the right place sometimes, especially on day 1, when the runway direction was constantly changed. Security was very active outside the base, on foot and 4WD's, but somehow they missed us. Keeping a very low profile without acting suspiciously, away from the fence, is the key I guess. Nevertheless, it is a good base for both spotting and photography, especially on the westside (which was my biggest surprise). Plenty of activity (also in weekends), variation in spots and a few elevated observation points providing an almost complete overview of runway and ramps. Just don't stick around at these places for long! I used them to check the runway in use, what's new on the tarmac and look for a nice secluded photo spot.

A new large control tower is being constructed on the northside, between the US base and the civil terminal.

A limited log can be found here: http://forum.scramble.nl/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=122104

Not everything I photographed is shared here, due to the presence of infrastructure on some shots. That applies unfortunately to the RAF Airseeker, MO Eagles, some F-16s and USS Wasp around the corner.

Starting off with the QRA returning, including a C with IRIS-T missiles:

What`s the story behind this "Zeus special" F-16?

Did 503 used to have the Zeus display colours? Looks like it. All I can can tell you is that on both days the full practice demo was performed (on the 20th using airframe 533), only without smoke and flares. Looks like winter practice by Major Stralis who is I believe based here.

Zeus display was (is?) the 523. Apparantly the 503 had special anniversary markings, but I cannot find any pictures of it.

#503 has carried these marks for at least a year now as I photographed it in September 2015. #512 also carried CFTs with a 'Zeus' flash on them. More images can be seen in my report here http://www.jetwashaviationphotos.com/Pages/115Mira.aspx

Maybe you didn't look to well..

503 was/is the spare demo when Zeus is having a display out of the country. During the Kavala air show there was another airshow Zeus was present, so they need two aircraft

Does that mean they have 2 display pilots as well? I thought Maj. Stralis was the only one in Greece, but perhaps there is a trained back-up pilot.

Yes, there are two. Maj. Stralis (340sqn) & Maj. Theocharopoulos (343sqn).
