11-16feb2020: Corona virus affects Singapore Air Show events

Key Singapore Airshow event cancelled

Aviation Leadership Summit cancelled,
China exhibitors pulling out as are other top names as virus worries scare off attendees.

February 4, 2020

Citing officials from the UN International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and three industry sources,
Reuters reported the Aviation Leadership Summit had been abandoned.

The summit is a key event for the airshow and typically hosts top aviation leaders from around the world.

The cancellation is the latest blow as several companies like Gulfstream also announced they were pulling out of the show.

Speakers at the Leadership Summit were due to include
ICAO President Salvatore Sciacchitano,
US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Administrator Steve Dickson and
International Air Transport Association (IATA) Director General Alexandre de Juniac.

Organiser Experia Events later confirmed the leadership summit would be cancelled,
although the website for the summit was still active as of today (4 February)
and made no mention of the cancellation.
Boeing, Airbus and Lockheed Martin, among the biggest exhibitors, said they still plan to attend the show.

A spokesman for Gulfstream told Asian Aviation by email that
“the health and well-being of our employees, customers and stakeholders are of paramount importance to Gulfstream.
In light of the recent coronavirus outbreak,
we are taking extra precautions by limiting international travel
and have made the difficult decision to withdraw from the upcoming Singapore Airshow.
We look forward to returning to the show for its next iteration in 2022.”
South Korea’s air force said it had decided not to participate as part of broader precautions against the coronavirus.
Its Black Eagles aerobatic team has taken part in the flying display at Singapore airshows in recent years.

Russian aerospace group Rostec plans to send a reduced delegation to the show, Russian media reported.

The Chinese National Team, August 1st, have arrived in Singapore.
SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China’s air force will participate in the upcoming Singapore Airshow, the country’s defence ministry said on Wednesday, at a time when concerns over the spread of a virus from China are overshadowing Asia’s biggest aerospace and defence event.
China’s defence ministry said in a post on its official WeChat account that its air force had been invited by Singapore to take part in the airshow between Feb 5-18, adding that it would nine aircraft and more than 100 personnel.

Remarkably, the supporting Il-76's came from an airbase in Hubei province (yes, that's the one where the virus started)... :!:

Noted whilst taking off from Changi yesterday:
Static - C-17A, KC-135, P-8A, 2 Ospreys and A330MRTT.

There was a further C-17A and 2 additional A330MRTT (1 in special marks) on the field to the west of the exhibition site on what appeared to be new large dispersals. 2 AH-64 and 1 F-22A seen arriving whilst a light grey C-130 was preparing to depart.

Unfortunately no Ba Yi today.

On the 13th during departure noticed one more F-22 (03-4057/HH?) and one more F-35B (169295/VK-09?) on the Changi East apron mid-airfield. The tail numbers listed from different sources on-line. Not noted myself. Also the seven Ba Yi J-10’s a little further north. Obviously not on the same apron as the USAF.

There were other bizz jets and airliner types but I did not need any of them as I could care less for those.

On static the Thai F-5’s were checked and the E model matched the scramble database however the F model seemed to carry the Kh18kh5-24 number instead of 5-23. Can anyone confirm this?

As the flying started on the 11th a downpour happened right over show center making it impossible to read the Apaches from camera. The weather on the 12th was much better but still low clouds and some haze.

The PLAAF flew 09 as a single in the time-slot for the entire team due to weather. After all flying was complete the entire team went up in a six ship with the others noted above.

Side note: rather interesting to see US, Russian, and Chinese military during the show. The USAF pilots were rather interested in selfies with the Su-30MKM.

Cheers,

Tally

Updated with the flying stuff from the 12th.

Also can anyone shine a light on the F-5THF on the Thai tail number?

Cheers,

Tally.
