Lufthansa orders additional aircraft at Boeing

Things happen fast in the world of aviation...! Earlier on 9 May 2022, we reported that Lufthansa was weighing its options for its long-haul fleet due to the delayed deliveries of B787-9s and B777-9s. Now, the airline has announced it has reached an agreement with Boeing for additional aircraft.

For its passenger-fleet Lufthansa has purchased seven additional B787-9s. The aircraft were originally destined for other customers and will be delivered in 2025 and 2026. At the same time, the airline reshuffled its delivery schedule for its 25 B787-9s already on order, bringing forward some deliveries planned for 2025 to 2023 and 2024. Lufthansa is adding the additional aircraft and accelerating the deliveries as it now expects to receive its first B777-9 in 2025 instead of 2023.

The company also purchased ten additional freighters to expand the fleet of Lufthansa Cargo. A second-hand B777F is set to join the airline in two months, while it also ordered two new B777Fs and seven new B777-8Fs. The new B777-8Fs are scheduled to start arriving in 2027. Lufthansa Cargo is the second airline after Qatar Airways to order Boeing's newest freighter.
