Lufthansa Group orders additional widebodies

The Supervisory Board of the Lufthansa Group approved the acquisition of additional widebody aircraft. In a press release dated 2 March 2023, the Group is stating it is ordering 22 new aircraft, consisting of five A350-900s, ten A350-1000s and seven B787-9s. All aircraft are scheduled to be delivered from the mid-2020s and used to replace older A330-200s, A340-300s, A340-600s, B767-300ERs, and B777-200ERs within the Group.

Today, Lufthansa is operating 21 A350-900s and has now 33 additional of the type on order. Five of these have been allocated to Swiss from 2025 onwards. The order for the ten A350-1000s means the introduction of this version, which Lufthansa Group is planning to deploy to premium-heavy markets. As for the Dreamliners, Lufthansa is currently operating three B787-9s and has 36 remaining on order. So far, of these 36 none have been allocated to other airlines in the group but that seems to be a matter of time.
