Boeing signs deals with Vietnamese airlines
In the sidelines of the state visit of the President of Vietnam to the US, Boeing signed two deals with Vietnamese airlines.
First, Vietnam Airlines announced it has firmed-up its Letter of Intent for 50 B737-8s. The LoI was already signed back in September 2023 and took quite a while to be finalized. The aircraft were already booked as undisclosed. Deliveries are expected to take place between 2030 and 2032. According to the airline, it will utilize its new aircraft on domestic and short-haul international destinations. It has said it's also in talks with Boeing for an order for additional B787s.
A more surprising order announcement was the one of Sun PhuQuoc Airways. This new airline has ordered "up to" 40 B787-9s. No delivery timeline has been communicated. According to various Vietnamese news sites, the deal is for 20 firm orders and 20 options but that hasn't been confirmed by either the airline or the manufacturer.
Sun PhuQuoc was established in 2025 and is owned by the Sun Group, a large real estate and tourism company from Phu Quoc. It also owns the, soon to be opened, new airport in Phu Quoc. It currently employs two Airbus A320neos, two A321-200s, and six A321neos on domestic routes. Next month, the airline will begin its first international flights to Taipei. It has ambitious plans to have a fleet of 100 aircraft by 2030.
