The primary function of RAF Barkston Heath is to act as a Relief Landing Ground for RAF Cranwell. The airfield originally opened in 1941 and was home to the 61st Troop Carrier Group of the 9th USAAF during the Second World War. Nowadays, it is home to only one unit, the Defence Elementary Flying School which operated eighteen Mk II Firefly two seat trainers but have switched to the Tutor T1 years ago.
The station has three active runways with all aprons and hangars to the east of it.
RAF Barkston Heath is located east of the A1. Take the exit near Grantham onto the A52 towards Boston. Take a right onto the B6403, which leads to RAF Barkston Heath.
When you arrive on the B6403, just as you see the airfield, take a left onto the road along the fence. Just before it makes a turn to the left, you will see a runway at your right. Park your car and position yourself for some landing action.
On the B6403, you will see the airfield at your left. Park your car near the crash gates and look around for a view onto the aprons and hangars.
If you continue on the B6403, you will note the runway. park your car along the road for a view of landing aircraft here. The runway will be quite far for departing aircraft, though.
