Report made by: Iwan Bögels, Various contributors at MSF
Report last updated: 14 December 2001

For the fourth time in a row, a spottersday was organised at Kleine Brogel AB in Belgium. What started off as a small event in 1997 to create a opportunity for spotters to make some pictures of visiting Starfighters, has now become a major event which is visited by almost 2000 aircraft enthusiasts. The organisation knows how to organise such an event creating great viewpoints to make splendid pictures on the ground and in the air. At Scramble we are especially proud of the fact that the organisation uses our SIS-Updates messageboard to attract as many spotters as possible. We like to believe that the large numbers of spotters who visited this day was a result of the advertisement on our website, but this way of thinking could be the vanity of Scramble's Webmaster of course.

With this we want to thank the people at Kleine Brogel airbase for this great day. The pictures and the data on this report show what great photo opportunities were created and how the organisation succeeded in attracting some special visitors to KB. Well done !

More pictures of this event can be found at our Photogallery

Wow... A typical example of standing at the right spot. The "spottersplace", especially created for the visitors of the Kleine Brogel Spotterday, is at the end of the runway. If the aircraft stay low then great pictures can be made using a 300mm lens or more. This lasts until two o'clock because the sun will be in the wrong position after that time. Luckily most of the aircraft passing by were piloted by people who know what it takes to make a great picture, although the French Mirage2000 pilots should have a lesson in low flying... A formation of four A-10s came passing by and gave a real show. The first two aircraft were climbing and turning just at the right spot above the waiting crowd at the end of the runway. A-10A 81-0992 was the first to pass and now many people did know what to expect. Marco Ferrageau's reaction was quick enough to make this great shot.

Not only good opportunities to make pictures of flying aircraft, also good pictures can be made on the ground. This is because of the location of the spotterscorner which is right next to the taxitrack. In the morning the best shots can be made if the aircraft are still taxiing on the runway but later on the day the best place to make pictures is when the aircraft are passing by.

The only problem is... Because of the crowd it is very hard to get a good place near the fence. Every year people will carry some steps with them and they tend to be larger and larger every year. Next time I will bring a flying carpet...

The Turkish F-16s returned from their mission in the late afternoon. Interesting detail is that the 192 Filo badge which was in the tail two weeks before its visit to Belgium has now been removed.

As always at a Tigermeet the aircraft are covered in tigercolors all over the place. Luckily we do not have to be in a jury to decide which aircraft was covered with the most beautiful tigerskin. This would be very hard to decide, but this Tornado would certainly rank as one of the best.

This German Phantom really got the hang of it. It passed by numerous times in all sorts of ways. Fast, slow, sharp turning, with hooks and gear out etc etc. Another example of how great it is to have a spottersday where the organisation and pilots exactly understand what the crowd wants.

The prize for best show goes to the crew of the F-15E of the 494th FS based at Lakenheath. The pilots were rewarded with a standing ovation when they landed after some very tight turns just above the crowd. A real pleasure for people with Canon equipment with fast auto focus lenses !
