Saab 35 Draken
Project 1200 can be defined as the beginning of what is now known as the Saab Draken ("Dragon"). The requirements for this project were defined by the FMV (Swedish Air Force Air Material Board) in September 1949. Already in November of that same year the FMV ordered the first aircraft study. Different kind of wing structures, engines, fuel loads etc. resulted eventually in Project 1250. This project met the demands of FMV. A small-scale model, named the Saab 210, made its 25-minute maiden flight on 21 January 1952. The Saab 210 showed the characteristic double delta wing. The tests with this model (7/10th scale) were successful and Project 1250 was accepted for full development. In April 1952 the Air Force awarded a contract for the construction of three prototypes, designated Type 35. The Draken was born.

This famous aircraft went into full production starting on 15 February 1958. The lines were running on for more then two decades and a total of 615 Drakens were constructed in 12 different versions. In export terms only three other nations ordered the aircraft.

These webpages have been created in order to obtain all available information on each individual airframe. To do this we have opened the Scramble Draken Database. We hope to receive a lot of information so eventually we are able to present the complete picture. This however cannot be done without your help so if you have updates or corrections please send them to us using the feedback windows at the bottom of each Draken page.

As there are many fans of the Draken all over the world we have created a mailinglist about this magnificent aircraft. You can join this mailinglist using this box.
