The first Typhoons taken on charge by the RAF were T1 and F2 marks. They have an air-to-air capability only, later examples were T3 and FGR4 marks. On top of that all older aircraft will be upgraded to T3 and FGR4 standard as well.

The last of many! Defence cuts after the end of the cold war already slashed the number of Tornado F3 squadrons. Further defence custs, and the introduction of the Typhoon, reduced the number all the way back to a single squadron! At RAF Leuchars only 111(F)sq is still equipped with the Tornado F3 air defence fighter.

In view of operational deployments most Tornado GR4 aircraft do not carry any squadron markings. On the bright side, the fleet has been allocated with fixed codes, which makes it a lot easier to identify individual aircraft! The serial number of the aircraft shown here is painted on the rear fuselage, just behind the wins and invisible due to the underwing load. However the large white code in the tailfin identifies this jet as ZA456.
