After operating mostly UK-manufactured helicopters in the early stages of its existence, the SLAF started operating the Russian Mi-17 (and Mi-171, like this CH597) in 1993. This particular helicopter was destroyed in the Tamil Tiger attack on Colombo on 24 July 2001.
