One of the first problems we encountered when we started creating the Russian Order of Battle were the Cyrillic characters. In this early stage we had to decide whether we should 'translate', 'transcript' or 'transliterate' all the names, like geografical and units.
Because translating would have the additional problem that not all the names have English counterparts, this was the first to be dropped.
But as the British transcription turns out to be the most used in aviation, we have chosen for this one, but to be complete, several other tables are included below.
The tables shown below include several national transcriptions and the following transliterations;
| BSI | British Standard Institute (UK) & ISI - Institute for Scientific Information (USA) |
| LC | Library of Congress & American Library Association (USA) |
| DIN | Deutsches Institut für Normung (Germany) |
| ISO | International Organization for Standardization |
| GOST | Gosstandart Rossii |
| sci | scientific |
Where this is desirable, we will include other well known spellings in the footnotes as well.
Of course, updates are always welcome. If you have corrections or additions please send them to us !

Notes;
- The Ъ and Ь signs are respectively the 'hard' and the 'soft' sign, indicating how the preceding letter is pronounced. They have no equivalent in the Roman script.
- In the Library of Congress column we simplified the presentation on several occasions. Officially the translitaration of the letter Ю should be
instead of I^u.
- Sometimes there are two possible transcritions presented, usually depending on the position of the character in the word. For instance, in the UK colomn the first transcription is in the case of the character is in the middle of on the end of the word, the second is for when the character is the first letter, or when it follows directly on a vowel. For instance Ефремов is written as Yefremov.
