Over the past three decades Hungary operated a large number of Mi-8's in various variants. The first batch of approx. sixteen was delivered in the late 60's and included at least fourteen Mi-8T's and two Mi-8S. During the 80's some 43 additional Hips were assembled by the Danubian Aircraft Company. Due to the changed political situation only 32 of these were eventually delivered with the remaining eleven being placed in storage at Tököl. These were later sold to various customers abroad. In addition nine additional Mi-8T's and one Mi-8S entered service during the 90's. These were former Iraqi helicopter which were undergoing maintenance at Tököl and embargoed following the first Gulf War in 1991. Also seven Mi-17's are in use with the ML including two demodified Mi-17TPB variants. Also one Mi-9 command and control variant has been in service but its current status is unknown.
