The AB412 is a more powerful and modern version of the AB205. The Aviazione dell' Esèrcito bought 24 of these helicopters so far. More might be ordered to replace the AB205 but no decisions have been made yet.

Gruppo was destined to move to Viterbo but this was cancelled at the
last minute. 526° flies a few AB-412's with nose-mounted weather
radar from the disbanded 39º Gruppo Squadroni 'Drago' and is often seen
in delicate operational areas. The status of the helo's is however unclear

For a long time the only fixed wing aircraft operated by the Italian army were the O-1E and its Italian made version SM.1019E. Both are light observation aircraft which were in principal used for reconnaisance and Forward Air Control. During the early 1990s however three Do-228 aircraft were ordered with Dornier. By mid 1994 all three were delivered and they currently operate from the grass strip at Viterbo.

Squadrone ACTR is usually detached to Roma-Ciampino Viterbo consist
of two parts: The Airfield and the Barracks (Caserma) which are
separated by the main road. Behind the wall of the Caserma you
can find the helicopters of 1° and 28 ° Gruppo Squadroni, the
rest is based at the Airfield. 4° Reggimento di Sostegno cavalleria dell'Aria "Scorpione' performs overhaul for the CH-47/AB212/AB412, and reports to Capo Servizi TRAMAT COMLOG SUD. |

The largest helicopter on strenght by the Aviazione dell' Esèrcito is the CH-47 Chinook. The entire fleet is based at the main Italian army airbase Viterbo.
Clearly visible on the picture is the removable fire fighting equipment which is paid for with Dipartimento Protezione Civile funds. With this red pipeline which is hanging out of the front door water can be pumped up from rivers, lakes or the sea. Just visible, on the other side of the helicopter in the middle of the fuselage, is a second red pipe which is than used to
"dump" the water on the fire.

The large white codes as shown on this picture are slowly disappearing. Since the mid 1990s more and more helicopters are painted in a single green colour with smaller, black codes making it much harder to identify the identity of the helicopter in question.
