53° Stormo on Cameri was disbanded on July 28th 1999. The 653ªSC still flies as an independent unit with the P180AM from Milano-Linate though.

During the Gulf War in 1991 Italy also deployed a number of Tornado IDS aircraft to the Middle East. This was done under the name Operation Locusta and planes plus crews were drawn from all Italian Tornado IDS Gruppi. Unfortunately one Tornado was lost due to Anti-Aircraft Artillery. Luckily however both crew members managed to eject to safety and were released from captivity after the war was over. Over 10 years later several Tornados still wear the desert sand camouflage.

The 103°Gruppo CBR/51°Stormo at Treviso-Istrana was the first AMI unit to receive the AMX fighter. This Brasilian/Italian development had quite a few problems when first entered service. The first batch is actually already withdrawn from use but upgrades to later batches made the AMX to a agile light attack aircraft which performed very will during the Kosovo war and NATO trainings.

Almost every Stormo (wing) within the AMI has a Squadriglia Collegamenti (liaisons flight). Each one has at least a small propellor plane (S-208M) assigned but some also operate with a couple AB212AM helicopters. These are not only used for military tasks but also for rescue flights in the area around the base where they are located. Here an AB212AM of the 651ªSCC/51°Stormo is seen taking off at Treviso-Istrana.

The 313°Gruppo is also known as the Frecce Tricolori.

Formerly based at Rimini-Miramare the 5°Stormo moved to nearby Cervia-San Giorgio in 1995. The two Gruppi of the 5°Stormo however were split up. The 23°Gruppo CIO, of which a F-104S-ASA-M is seen here, moved to Cervia and the 102°Gruppo CB moved to Brescia-Ghedi where it converted to Tornado IDS/IDT aircraft and became part of the 6°Stormo. The 23°Gruppo recently said goodbye to the Starfighters.

The aging S-208M is still going strong with many base flights and with the CMVV at Roma-Guidonia. There however are rumours that the aircraft will be replaced in the not to distant future. One of the possible replacement candidates is the PC-6 which can also be used for para training.

The 31°Stormo, based at Roma-Ciampino, is the VIP unit of the AMI. The unit consists out of two Gruppi. First there is the 93°Gruppo TS which flies with the Da-50 and Da-900 VIP jets. This Gruppo also operates two SH-3D/TS helicopters which are often used to fly the pope during his travels through Italy. The second unit is the 306°Gruppo TS which operates with the G1159A and A-319CJ.

Although 21°Gr/CIO flying with the 53- coded F3's has been disbanded, one squadriglia of 12 Gruppo has taken over the Tiger markings.

The Tornado ADV were leased from the RAF to take the role as interceptor from the ageing Starfighters. All Tornado's are returned back to the RAF and most of them are scrapped. Now the AMI are leasing 30 F-16A Block 15 ADF and four F-16B Block 10 Fighting Falcons, with an option to some more as a replacement for these Tornados. In the end the EF2000 should be the final aircraft to fly with 36 Stormo.

Besides peacetime Search and Rescue (SAR) tasks the AMI fleet of HH-3F Pelikans is also used for Combat SAR. That is why the second batch was delivered in the green/grey camouflage. Unfortunately the beautiful white/yellow/dayglow colours on the helicopters from the first batch were slowly re-painted into this camo as well.
