How to send images to Scramble

1. Images
Digital is the form in which we prefer to get images for use in the magazine and on the website. We are always happy to receive quality digital originals (from a digital camera) and scans (from slides, negatives or prints) that you are willing to make available to us. Please read the instructions below before uploading.

Send us pictures with a minimum width of 1600 pixels. Scramble is printed at 300dpi and photos are usually 13 centimeters wide. This means any image less than 1600 pixels wide (actually 1535, but we have to be on the safe side) will not provide the quality we need. On the other side, more is better, so larger images are welcome - the only limit is a reasonable file size in the email. Latest info: in the near future Scramble cover photos will even be printed at 400dpi meaning no less than 2050 pixels in width are useful or even required.

The preferred file formats are JPEG (.jpg) and TIFF (.tif) but bear in mind file size could be a problem with TIFF. Be sure to use minimum compression when converting to JPEG, otherwise quality will be lost! If you really want to spoil us, use file names like F27_C?1_Soesterberg_02dec81_YourName.jpg, but this is not a must. However, we do need information like photographer, date and location and very much appreciate any additional info. Please provide this information in your email or even within the image file (IPTC or EXIF info).

Obviously, manipulation of photos (like changing registrations or anything else) makes them unacceptable. Enhancing your photos (colour correction, sharpening etc.) is OK if you know how to do this. If you are unsure about it just leave it to us. Unless stated otherwise you give Scramble permission to use your submitted material in the magazine and on the website.

2. Scanning Images
We can use images scanned by a flatbed scanner or slide scanner. Of course, digital pictures created by a slide scanner are usually much better quality (if the slide is good of course).

If you have special pictures you want to share with us (try to avoid images from a air show static display with fences and crowd visible......) scan them with the highest resolution available on your scanner. It is possible to decrease the images' dpi and size after scanning but not the other way around.

.... Bad examples ...
Not part of the scan instruction but just a few examples of pictures we simply can not use...

3. Converting Images
Step 1
Level and crop the image until the airplane fills the major part of the frame. In the vertical, some extra space may be useful for us when editing Scramble. Do not crop too tight.

Step 2
Resize the image to 1600 pixels wide or more. It has to be at least that big before resizing! If you know how to, feel free to set the resolution to 300 pixels/inch but otherwise just leave it as it is. It's the total number of pixels that counts.

That is all. Simple? Save the file as a jpg image and send it to us. The address can be found below.
