General
The international airport of Madrid is Barajas. There are three runways, 18L-36R, 18R-36L and 15-33. Runway 18R-36L has recently been opened and is the longest in Europe. The runway is 4350 meters long! Barajas has three terminals, easily named terminal one, two and three. Terminal One is used for intercontinental flights, Two for European flights, and Three for domestic traffic. Although this is the normal way for passengers, aircraft are often parked somewhere else and the passengers are brought to their aircraft by bus.

Terminal 2
The terminals offer little views for spotters, except for terminal two. At the departure level there are some shops and behind these shops is a rest area. This area has very big windows and these give you a perfect view on the aircraft using runway 15/33 and 18L/36R. Everything that departs from runway 36L also has to taxi past terminal two, except for traffic from terminal 3. In the area are big, comfortable chairs and the room is cooled, so a long stay can be quite nice. It is possible to take pictures trough the (tinted) glass, but bring something to clean the window.

Around The Airport
Runway 18L
Drive from the terminal towards the highway and take the highway towards Burgos. Take the first exit (Barajas) and turn right at the roundabout. Hold left at the first traffic lights and drive in the direction of Ajalvir on road M111. After a couple of traffic lights the road leads underneath runway 15 and after a couple of hundred meters, you have reached the threshold of runway 18L.
If you go to the left just before the tunnel, there are some hills overlooking the construction site of the new airport terminals. As a part of the apron is already finished, it is used to park stored aircraft.
Runway 33
If runway 33 is used for landing you can find a spot easily from here. Another option is to drive to the cargo area and to turn left at the last roundabout (near the highway). If you take the road, which is between MRW and DHL, the road will lead you past the threshold of runway 36R. Photography is impossible here, as runway 36R is only used for departures. If you drive a little further it is possible to photograph aircraft on final for runway 33. This is only possible in the afternoon, because of the sun. From along this road, some obscured views over the stored aircraft at the Iberia hangars exist. The best way thoug to see the stored aircraft is during landing at runway 33.

Getting There
You can take the orange metro line (4) to Mar de Cristal from downtown and change to the pink line (8) to get to the airport. A bus service from Plaza de Colón (89) is running 22 hours a day, the bus stop on the Plaza de Colón is a little hard to find as it is underground. A local bus (101) connects the airport with Barajas and Canillejas, which is the terminus of the green metro line (5).
