General

Gatwick is the second busiest airport of London. A lot of the charter traffic to the south of Europe departs here. So you will see a lot of Air 2000, Airtours, Britannia, Monarch and JMC here. Also, a couple of North American companies, like Delta, Northwest, Continental and USAirways still use Gatwick instead of Heathrow.

The South Terminal
There are two terminals: North and South. The North Terminal is mostly used by British Airways and South by all the other companies. On the roof of the south terminal is a spectator’s area with a good view over the airport. As there is only one main runway, you have a good overview of the arrival and departing traffic. On the spectators area also a Handley Page Herald is preserved and the nose section of a Comet. There is also a cafeteria and a hobby shop. When the terrace is closed you can go to the third floor of the South terminal were a restaurant area is present. Large windows give you an obstructed view of the apron. From the North terminal spotting is nearly impossible.

The Parking Garage
On top of the parking garage you have a good view of the landing aircraft at runway 26, although it is officially not allowed for spotters to be there and you get kicked off the garage if you stay there too long. The best time of the day is from late afternoon onwards, so not so good for the winter months.
Runway 26
If you walk out of the South terminal to the threshold of runway 26, there are some spots were you can take good shots of aircraft lining up. You do need something to stand on though to look over the obstructions. The sun will be the best in the early morning up to lunchtime. From along this road you also can take good landing shots over the whole day, as you can walk to either side of the approach path.
Runway 08
At the other side of the runway there is a nice place as well. Drive south from Gatwick on the A23 to Crawley. At the second crossing after the airport, turn right, then turn left at the roundabout. After a while you will come to a pub, the Flight Tavern, this is were you should park your car and walk (about 15 min) along the road. At one moment you will see a fence where you have a nice view of the threshold of runway 08. From here it is also possible to take landing shots at both sides of the runway.

Getting There
The Gatwick Express train service connects the airport to London-Victoria station. A number of other train services call at Gatwick as well. A couple of coach services to Heathrow and other airports stop at the main bus station at the ground floor in front of the South terminal.
