General |

In the early 1930s shipbuilding business was in a deep recession, so in 1933 the Blohm+Voss company decided to establish a subsidiary called Hamburger Flugzeugbau -although this was quickly changed to Blohm+Voss again- at newly acquired land near Finkenwerder. After the war a new plant was set up on these grounds, at first only for aircraft maintenance but later production started again with licence build Nord N2501 Noratlas', all under the old name Hamburger Flugzeugbau. HFB later merged into the MBB consortium, and finally was bought by DASA. |
In the meantime Finkenwerder had become the second production site within the Airbus consortium, being responsible for the final assembly of the A318, A319 and A321, building components for the whole Airbus family and making cargo A300s customer-ready. |
The new A380s are flown in primer to Finkenwerder from the assembly line in Toulouse, to be fitted out before they are delivered to the customer. For these A380-activities new facilities are being build on newly drained grounds on the north-west part of the airfield, while also the runway will be lengthened. |

Getting There |
From highway 7/E45 south of Hamburg, take exit 30 HH-Waltershof and head west towards Neuenfelde. This is the last exit before crossing the Elbe, so be sure to be on it! You will pass Finkenwerder village and the airfield will come up at your right hand side. |

The factory has also some facilities on the south-east side of the road, so when aircraft are crossing this road is closed off. On both sides of the crossing you can climb the dike which lies between the road and the airfield for a good overview of the production facilities. You can park your car on a parking lot on the southwest side or nearer the village. |
