Next to spotting at Singapore, I also decided to take a cheap AirAsia flight to Kuala Lumpur for some spotting there.
As the (better) spotting locations are a bit further from the terminals, I rented a car for 2 days. At KUL, they created an observation deck next near the treshold of runway 32L, which is one of the main landing runways. Light gets good from about 11-12:00 and better during the rest of the afternoon. From the deck you have a nice view on the landing aircraft. But be prepared for the heat and humidity and bring enough water.
KLIA is quite far from the city itself and isn't as busy as Singapore. It has two terminals and 3 runways. Basically, it are two airports. KLIA 1 is using runways runways 14L-32R and 14R-32L, while KLIA 2 has runway 15-33. Normally, it operates in a Northern-direction, meaning departing and landing on the 32s and 33.
KLIA 2 is the main base for AirAsia and around 75% of all these flights will use 15-33. You do get some of them at 14R-32L but not so much. So, if you want to spot those, which will get a bit boring after a while, you need to find a spot at 15-33.
I decided to stay at the 14R-32L runway for its variety of airlines and managed to capture the following.
1. Photographed while taxiing to the gate is this AirAsia A321P2F 9M-TLP, which it operates for Teleport:
